Overview Can we help?

The Charity and Social Enterprise Team (CASE) was formed to specifically focus on our charitable clients bringing together expertise from a wide range of departments to provide a comprehensive approach for the different charities.

How we can help

Areas where our expertise can support your charity

Whether you are a small local charity or a larger national charity with a local presence we can help you.  As the charity sector continues to grow and provide vital services to the local community, so the legal services we provide continue to evolve and adapt to new legislation.

Charities are similar to businesses in needing legal advice, whether it relates to commercial contracts, property purchase or management, dealing with employees or tendering for contracts. The key difference is often the way a charity is structured and also the environment in which they are working.

We can tailor the advice and level of support to each charity, not all enterprises need the whole range of services we offer, so it’s important that we are flexible.

We are proud to act for a wide range of local and national charities and community interest groups, which include grant-making organisations, hospices, sports clubs and village halls.

We work closely with other professional firms who specialise in supporting charities, such as accountants and insurance brokers, to complement the services we offer.

Insight for Charities

We produce a quarterly newsletter for the sector, called Insight for Charities.  If you would like to read our latest Insight for Charities Newsletter please click here.

Why we are different

Why we are different

The team is made up of specialists from our Tax and Estate Planning, Employment, Property and Dispute Resolution departments, and provides practical advice, tailored to meet the individual needs of our clients.  We understand the unique demands and requirements of the sector.

The reason we stand out from the crowd is our commitment to the sector and our diverse client base.  We recognise the unique demands of the sector, value for money, balanced with an increasing need to be professional in your endeavours.  Charitable governance is in the spotlight at the moment, following recent high profile problems, and it is vital to ensure you are well governed and compliant.  Adverse publicity can really damage charities and threaten their continued existence.

We can advise on all aspects of employment law, a key area of dispute for charities, as in any business, including the crucial differences between employees and volunteers.  Our property team regularly advises on charity acquisitions and disposals, ensuring compliance with the charity legislation, as well as lease negotiation and planning issues.

A number of team members and directors of Whitehead Monckton are trustees of charities so they really understand the issues and challenged faced.

We are ranked as a leading firm for Charities in the Legal 500 independent directory and the team is noted for its experience in advising Charities on property transactions, governance, employment, tax and trusts.

Whitehead Monckton Charitable Foundation

Whitehead Monckton Charitable Foundation

Whitehead Monckton also has a charitable foundation which may be of interest to your charity.  This was established in 2012 to accept and distribute legacies received from our clients to support local charities.  It is a registered charity and has Tim Monckton as chair of the trustees.  To date over £300,000 has been distributed to local charities following their successful submissions.

If you would like to know more about how to apply for a grant or to see where previous grants have been distributed please review the Foundation’s website. We are proud of the contributions the Foundation has made so far to local charities.
