What is it?
At Docklands Solicitors, we think it is important to talk to our clients about succession and tax planning in broad terms, at the same time as helping clients with their Wills. However, we recognise that sometimes a “standard” Will is all that is needed.
It may be that you are off on holiday or simply don’t have the time to commit to a more involved process at this time, but will come back to talk to us about succession and tax planning at a later date. Or, it may be that you have just bought a house, married or had children and now need your first Will. Whatever the reason, we have developed the “Standard Will Arrangement” to provide you with this service at a fixed cost and in a way that reduces the time commitment from you.
A Standard Will is intended to provide you with a straightforward Will, enabling you to include provisions for the distribution of personal effects, expressing your wishes for your funeral and if relevant appointing guardians, as well as the straightforward distribution of your assets to your beneficiaries.
Examples where it can be appropriate are:
- A couple wish to leave everything to each other or to their children (equally) on the second death
- An individual wishes to leave his or her estate to certain named beneficiaries
As part of the Standard Will Arrangement we will always include funeral wishes and the appointment of guardians for your children where appropriate.
It is still vital to ensure a Standard Will reflects your wishes and enables your executors to administer your estate, so professional advice from experienced lawyers is key to this service.
How much will it cost?
- Standard Will for an individual £400 plus VAT
- Standard Mirror Wills for a couple £550 plus VAT
In some circumstances a Standard Will may not be appropriate and if this is the case, we will advise you, and invite you in for an initial meeting to discuss your instructions and clearly set out the additional fees which would be charged. You can then make an informed decision as to how you want to proceed without concerns over future fees.
How does it work?
To proceed with making a Standard Will, please complete the Succession Planning Questionnaire either online or by printing and returning the pdf version along with emailing proof of your identity for money laundering purposes, to firstname.lastname@example.org. Alternatively pop into the office to have your ID documents copied and certified. Unfortunately we cannot prepare Wills until we have seen proof of your identity, photo ID and proof of address is required.
We will acknowledge receipt of the Questionnaire by email and confirm that your instructions fall under our Standard Will Arrangement, and we will then prepare drafts for your approval by email.
Once approved, we will need to meet with you once to supervise execution of the Wills, to check your identity, confirm you have testamentary capacity and ensure that the Will will be valid. This can be done at your convenience, either at our office or if you work locally in Canary Wharf, we may be able to visit you at work to help ease the burden on your time.
